I first heard pioneer George Work talk about his ranch at a meeting of the California Native Grass Association. He was giving a slide show, demonstrating the value of the information he was passing on, to a very appreciative audience. I was laughing with glee myself, my hands stinging from clapping at the points he made so devastatingly against standard ranching methods and for the kind of land management he was using.
Since then I’ve been learning about sustainable agriculture and investigating Holistic Resource Management.® (A perhaps unfortunately named movement; its founder, Allan Savory, is from Africa and doesn’t know how many flakey new age enterprises have appropriated the word ’holistic,’ especially in California. Australians, George Work tells me, don’t think much of the word either, for the same reason)....
